Let’s do it Leadership – My Review of Sir Richard Branson’s Interview - 1

Part one of three articles blog series

As a Management Consultant, I live to share the best leadership and management practices. In a recent video, I reviewed Sir Richard Branson’s Entrepreneur magazine interview on building successful business.

I know some of my readers would like to read my review rather than watch it in video format. Instead of an exact transcription, I decided to elaborate on the main points.

In this blog series, I’m going to share some additional quotes from Sir Branson not found in my audio review. Whether you’ve watched the audio review or not, you’ll find more leadership and business examples and advice in this written series (and you’ll get to read it without those ums and ahhs in the audio).

Let’s get started.

For all of you who cannot remember from the top of your head who Sir R.B. is, I am going to tell you he is a Chairman of ‘’Virgin Group’’ (http://www.virgin.com).

He is a man who has created over 360 successful companies; he employs 50,000 people in over 30 countries.

Some people say that Sir Richard Branson is ‘’larger than life’’. He is a global icon entrepreneur, famous for challenging convention and succeeding against the odds. His famous mantra (that sounds good to etnrepreneur in me) is “Screw it, let’s do it.”

As some people commented, while watching his keynote at recent marketing conference in USA, -''You think you’re doing pretty well, and then you meet that guy.''

They also added that Sir Richard Branson projects approachability and humility, which is something I admire, even more so coming from a person with tremendous success.

In his interview in Entrepreneur magazine, Sir Richard Branson was asked about his secrets for building successful businesses.

Reflecting across 40 years, he has come up with ''5 secrets''

Secret No 1. Enjoy What You Are Doing

Sir Branson explains, ''Because starting a business is a huge amount of hard work, requiring a great deal of time, you had better enjoy it.''

Secret No 2. Create Something That Stands Out

In the article interview, Sir Branson explains the concept of business.

''For me, building a business is all about doing something to be proud of bringing talented people together and creating something that’s going to make a real difference to other people’s lives.''

Secret No 3. Create Something That Everybody Who Works for You is Really Proud Of

''Businesses generally consist of a group of people, and they are your biggest assets.'' continues Branson.

Understanding the foundation of business and leadership is important. In my executive coaching sessions, I review a business basic management practices first.

Leadership is the cornerstone to a successful business. I know, I know ... If I had a penny for each time a CEO said people are their biggest asset, I would be rich, but Sir Branson later reveals how he models his beliefs.

In this first part of my written series, I’m highlighting the basics of his first five secrets; Secrets 1, 2, and 3 that apply to building new businesses from scratch.

Later, we’ll explore more secrets of Sir Branson’s leadership advice and management in practice.

In the next post, we’ll discuss Secret 4 – Be a Good Leader.

What do you think are the keys to building a successful business? Any ideas of your own? Or did you like anything from this interview, except the mantra?
